Virtual reality is an incredible experience—until your headset stops charging. This was the case with a Meta Oculus Quest 2 that arrived at our repair shop. The USB-C charging port had exploded, leaving it completely burnt out and unusable. Fortunately, we had the skills and tools to bring it back to life with a brand-new charging port.

If you’re experiencing similar issues and want to attempt a repair yourself, here’s a detailed guide on how to disassemble the Oculus Quest 2 and replace the charging port.
Tools You’ll Need
Before you start, gather the following tools:
✔ Precision screwdriver set (Phillips and Torx T5)
✔ Plastic pry tools or opening picks
✔ Tweezers
✔ Soldering iron and flux (for replacing the port)
✔ Replacement USB-C charging port
✔ Heat gun (optional, for loosening adhesive)
Step-by-Step Guide to Disassembling the Oculus Quest 2
Step 1: Remove the Facial Interface and Head Strap
- Gently pull off the facial interface (the foam padding).
- Detach the head strap by sliding it out of the brackets.

Step 2: Unscrew the Outer Casing
- Flip the headset over and remove the four screws securing the outer shell. These screws are usually under the facial interface.
- Carefully use a plastic pry tool to separate the front casing from the headset. Take your time, as the plastic clips are fragile.
Step 3: Disconnect the Battery and Motherboard
- Inside, locate the battery connector and unplug it to prevent short circuits.
- Identify the motherboard, which is secured with several screws. Remove these screws and carefully disconnect the ribbon cables attached to it.

Step 4: Remove the Damaged Charging Port
- Find the USB-C charging port at the right side of the VR Case.
- If the port is burnt or broken, it will need to be desoldered.
- Using a soldering iron, carefully remove the damaged port. Be cautious not to damage the surrounding components.

Step 5: Install the New Charging Port
- Align the new USB-C port and solder it in place.
- Double-check your solder joints to ensure a solid connection.

Step 6: Reassemble the Oculus Quest 2
- Reattach the motherboard and reconnect all ribbon cables.
- Screw everything back into place, ensuring all components are properly secured.
- Snap the outer casing back on, reinstall the head strap, and replace the facial interface.
